Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Sydney

Quality Dental Care for Extracting Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last four molars of your mouth and generally erupt between the late teens and early twenties. They may erupt without any problem for some people. But for others, wisdom teeth may lead to pain and complications. While getting oral surgery is not something anyone looks forward to, it can be necessary in cases where wisdom teeth are causing issues.

At Bellevue Hill Dental, we can help you with your wisdom teeth extractions with gentle care and comfort. With a comprehensive evaluation to understand your concerns and assess your dental condition and health, our wisdom teeth extraction dentists can provide a personalised treatment for your problematic wisdom tooth.

What is an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

A wisdom tooth becomes impacted when it does not have enough space to grow in the mouth or it is stuck in the jawbone or gum tissue. Since wisdom teeth are usually the last molars to erupt, other teeth may get in their way, or they may grow at the wrong angle, causing pain and inflammation.

This leaves the wisdom tooth partially exposed under the gum and increases the risk of plaque and bacteria getting into the tooth. It also makes brushing and flossing more difficult as they are located at the back and are not fully grown.

If your wisdom teeth get infected, the infection may have to be treated before oral surgery. An impacted wisdom tooth requires a wisdom teeth extraction procedure because it can cause further damage to your teeth by increasing risks of infection or overcrowding

Some of the complications caused by an impacted wisdom tooth include:

  • Pain from the pressure of being ‘impacted’– these teeth often are locked into the jawbones and have nowhere to grow.
  • Infection – teeth that are difficult to access and clean are more susceptible to infection. Infections from wisdom teeth can cause debilitating pain, facial swelling, and gum inflammation.
  • Tooth decay – because of their location at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean properly. This can increase the risk of tooth decay for both the wisdom teeth and the neighbouring teeth
  • Cysts – developmental and inflammatory cysts are less common but serious complications from wisdom teeth that have not been properly assessed and treated.

Twilight Sedation to Extract Wisdom Teeth

Twilight sedation, also known as conscious sedation, is a type of anaesthesia used to help patients relax during dental procedures such as tooth extractions. It is a combination of medications that produce a relaxed, sleepy state. During wisdom teeth extractions, twilight sedation allows the patient to remain conscious but calm throughout the procedure. Patients typically don’t remember the procedure when it’s over and are able to respond to verbal commands. Twilight sedatives also help reduce anxiety and pain during surgery.
