Extraction is always a last resort. Where a tooth can be saved with root canal therapy, a crown, or another restorative option, we will talk that through with you first. When a tooth genuinely is beyond saving, removing it promptly stops infection from spreading to the surrounding teeth and bone.
At Bellevue Hill Dental, we provide tooth extractions for patients across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, from straightforward simple extractions through to the surgical removal of broken or impacted teeth.
We also hold same-day emergency appointments for patients in acute pain.
When is a tooth extraction recommended?
- Severe decay — when the tooth structure is too compromised to support a filling or crown
- Dental abscess — when infection at the root tip has spread beyond what root canal therapy can resolve
- Cracked tooth — when a fracture extends below the gumline or through the root
- Periodontal disease — when advanced bone loss has left the tooth unsupported and mobile
- Orthodontic treatment — when teeth need to be removed to create space for alignment
- Failed root canal — when a previously treated tooth has re-infected beyond retreatment
- Preparation for dentures or full-arch implant treatment

Wisdom tooth removal is a separate procedure Partially or fully impacted wisdom teeth need a different kind of assessment and are handled under our dedicated wisdom teeth extraction service. See our wisdom teeth removal page for details. |
Types of tooth extraction
Simple extraction
A simple extraction is performed when a tooth has fully erupted through the gum and is accessible with forceps. Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is loosened using an elevator instrument and removed with a controlled rocking motion. Most simple extractions typically take 15–30 minutes and require no incision.
Surgical extraction
A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline, has curved or unusually shaped roots, is partially erupted, or is firmly anchored in dense bone. A small incision is made in the gum to access the tooth, and the tooth may be divided into sections for safer removal.
Stitches are placed afterwards to close the area, and healing takes a little longer than a simple extraction.
Tooth extraction cost in Sydney
The cost of a tooth extraction varies depending on the type of procedure and how complex it is. In general:
- Simple extractions are the more affordable option, performed when the tooth is fully erupted and accessible
- Surgical extractions sit at the higher end, reflecting the additional time, technique, and stitches involved
- Emergency consultations for same-day pain assessment are charged separately
- X-rays before the procedure are typically a small additional cost
Private health insurance extras typically cover part of the cost. Bellevue Hill Dental is a preferred provider for several major health funds. Make sure to bring your card, and we will help process your claim on the spot using HICAPS.
Afterpay is also available to help spread the cost into manageable instalments. Ask our team or dentists and we’ll provide a tailored quote at your appointment.
What to expect during and after a tooth extraction
Before the procedure
Your dentist will take a dental X-ray to assess the root shape, length, and proximity to any nerves or the sinus cavity before proceeding. You will be asked about your medical history, current medications (particularly blood thinners), and any allergies.
During the procedure
Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the tooth, the surrounding gum, and bone. You will feel pressure and movement throughout the procedure, but no pain. If you are anxious, let us know, so we can help. Oral sedation or happy gas can be arranged to help you feel more relaxed.
Immediately after
Gauze is placed over the socket, and you will be asked to bite down firmly for 20–30 minutes to encourage clot formation. The dental team will give you clear written aftercare instructions before you leave.
Recovery
|
Timeframe |
What to expect |
|---|---|
|
Day 1–2 |
Some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. This is normal and manageable with ibuprofen and paracetamol |
|
Day 3–4 |
Swelling peaks then begins to reduce; soft diet recommended |
|
Day 7 |
Most discomfort resolved; sutures removed if placed (surgical extractions) |
|
2–4 weeks |
Gum tissue closes over the socket; bone healing continues over months |
|
Watch for dry socket Dry socket happens when the blood clot that protects the socket dislodges or dissolves before the area has healed, usually 2–4 days after the extraction. Signs of this may include a dull, throbbing pain spreading from the socket, a bad taste, and visible bone in the socket. Get in touch with us straight away if you notice any of these. |
Do I need to replace the extracted tooth?
For most teeth (other than wisdom teeth), replacement is strongly recommended. Without it, the surrounding teeth gradually drift, the jawbone in that area starts to shrink, and chewing becomes less efficient over time.
Your options may include:
- Dental implant: the gold standard, where a titanium post replaces the root, preserving bone and supporting a crown. Most durable long-term option.
- Dental bridge: a fixed prosthesis anchored to crowns on adjacent teeth. No surgery required but adjacent teeth must be prepared.
- Partial denture: a removable option. Less expensive but less comfortable and stable than implants or bridges.
Your dentist will discuss replacement options at the extraction appointment or at a follow-up review once healing is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you decide whether a tooth really needs to be removed?
Extraction is a last-resort decision made after a full assessment. The team explores options and recommends removal only when it’s necessary to protect your oral health and the surrounding teeth.
What are the common reasons you might recommend an extraction?
The page lists several: significant infection or decay, wisdom-tooth complications, a tooth damaged beyond repair, advanced gum disease causing pain or infection, a non-functional/unstable tooth, or as part of an orthodontic plan to create space.
What’s the difference between a “regular” extraction and a wisdom-tooth extraction?
The clinic provides both. A regular extraction removes a problem tooth; wisdom-tooth extraction is considered when back molars don’t have room to erupt properly and start causing issues.
What checks are done before an extraction?
You’ll have a comprehensive consult with an oral exam and X-rays/digital scans. This helps measure bone and tooth position and map out the steps for your case.
What comfort options are available if I’m nervous?
Extractions are performed with local anaesthetic, and the clinic offers sedation options when appropriate (including IV sedation for wisdom-tooth cases) to help you feel more at ease.
Why might removal be part of orthodontic treatment?
In some plans, taking out one or more teeth creates space so teeth can be aligned properly and the bite can be corrected more predictably.
Can extracting a severely damaged or infected tooth help protect other teeth?
Yes. The clinic notes extraction may be recommended to preserve healthy teeth and overall oral wellbeing when a problem tooth risks ongoing issues.
What should I expect on the day of a regular extraction?
After your personalised plan is confirmed, the tooth is removed in-clinic by a gentle, experienced team using current techniques and anaesthesia/sedation options as needed.
Do you handle both simple and more complex surgical cases?
Yes. The page describes regular extractions at the clinic and also addresses wisdom-tooth removal when there’s not enough space or symptoms are present.
Are Saturday appointments available for extractions or reviews?
The clinic’s hours include Saturdays 8:30 am–2:00 pm (confirm availability when booking).
If I’m unsure whether I need an extraction, what should I do?
Book a consultation. The dentist will examine the area, take X-rays if needed, explain options, and outline a plan that fits your situation.
