Preventive and General Dentistry Procedures to Protect Your Smile
Bellevue Hill Dental has been part of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs since 1950. Founded by Dr Bryan Digges and now led by Dr David Digges and Dr James Digges, we’re a family-owned practice that has looked after generations of patients across Bellevue Hill, Bondi, Double Bay, Rose Bay, and the wider Eastern Suburbs.
We provide a full range of general dentistry services, from regular check-ups and cleans to fillings, emergency care, and everything in between. We’re a preferred provider for several major health funds, a Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) provider, and we hold same-day emergency appointments for patients in pain.
If you’re looking for a long-term dental home for your family, we would love to take care of you
Our general dentistry services
Check-ups and examinations
A thorough dental check-up every six to twelve months helps your dentist catch small issues before they become big ones. At every check-up, we examine your teeth, gums, soft tissue, bite, and jaw joints, and take X-rays where needed. The earlier we spot something, the simpler and gentler the fix tends to be.
Professional cleans
Our hygienists provide scale and clean appointments, gum health assessments, fluoride treatments, and personalised oral hygiene advice. Regular cleans remove the build-up that home brushing can’t reach — and they’re the foundation of preventing gum disease.

Tooth-coloured fillings
When your tooth needs a filling, whether from decay, a crack, or a worn-out filling, we use composite resin (tooth-coloured) fillings to help restore the integrity of your teeth. They bond directly to your tooth, blend in naturally, and need less drilling away of healthy tooth than older silver fillings.
Emergency dentistry
Toothache, a knocked-out tooth, a lost crown, and a broken filling are some dental emergencies that may happen unexpectedly, and they are stressful. We hold same-day emergency appointments for patients in acute pain or with dental trauma. Call us first thing in the morning, and we will do everything we can to see you the same day. After-hours pain advice is also available by phone.
Tooth extractions
When a tooth genuinely cannot be saved by restoration services, we will perform the extraction under local anaesthetic and walk you through your replacement options. That may be implants, bridges, or dentures, all at the same appointment, so you know exactly what comes next.
Custom mouthguards
Custom-fitted sports mouthguards for children and adults playing contact sports. A properly fitted custom guard offers significantly better protection and comfort than off-the-shelf versions. Mouthguard protection is worth the investment if your kids are on the field most weekends.
Nightguards for grinding
If you grind or clench your teeth during sleep (bruxism), a custom nightguard protects your teeth from accelerated wear and reduces the load on your jaw joint. Grinding is one of the most common causes of tooth damage and jaw pain in adults, and a well-fitted nightguard can make a meaningful difference.
Dentures
Full and partial dentures for patients who have lost multiple or all of their teeth. We work with experienced dental prosthetists to make sure your dentures fit well, function comfortably, and look natural. Where appropriate, we’ll also discuss implant-supported options.

We’ve been part of the local community for 75 years, with three generations of the Digges family caring for patients across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. That continuity matters.
We’re not just here for one appointment. We’re here for the full story of your family’s dental health, from your child’s first check-up through to the dental work you will have in your seventies.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is general dentistry?
General dentistry is everyday oral care—preventing, diagnosing, and managing common issues through routine check-ups and professional care.
How often should I book a general dental check-up?
Most people benefit from a visit every 6–12 months. Your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your oral health and risk factors.
What happens at a routine check-up?
Your dentist reviews your medical history, examines teeth, gums, and soft tissues, discusses findings, and outlines any recommended next steps.
Do I need dental x-rays? Are they safe?
X-rays are only taken when clinically necessary. We usually recommend taking bitewing x-rays every 18 – 24 months. Modern dental x-rays use low doses and safety measures are used to minimise exposure.
Will a general dental appointment hurt?
Most check-ups are comfortable. If any procedure is needed, local anaesthesia can be used to keep you comfortable.
How long does a general appointment usually take?
Allow about 45 minutes for a standard check-up and clean. First visits may take a bit longer to review your history and complete a thorough examination and clean.
When should I book sooner than my regular check-up?
Book promptly if you have toothache, facial swelling, a broken tooth, bleeding gums, a mouth ulcer lasting more than two weeks, or trauma.
How can I keep my mouth healthy between visits?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily, sip water often, limit sugary/acidic foods and drinks, and wear a mouthguard for contact sports.
Is general dentistry suitable for children and adults?
Yes. General dentistry supports oral health at every age, with advice tailored to life stage and individual needs.
How much does general dental care cost?
Fees vary by the type of care you need. You’ll receive an itemised estimate before treatment, and any rebates depend on your private health cover and eligibility.
